Chapter 27 - Magnetic Field and Magnetic Forces - Problems - Discussion Questions - Page 911: Q27.8

Answer

See explanation.

Work Step by Step

A current-carrying loop is a magnetic dipole, and will align itself so that the plane of the loop is perpendicular to an external magnetic field (page 900). It can be used as a compass. If you know the direction of the current flow, you can deduce the direction of the external magnetic field, and thus distinguish between north and south.
