Chapter 11 - Equilibrium and Elasticity - Problems - Discussion Questions - Page 356: Q11.13

Answer

The claim seems suspicious.

Work Step by Step

If the apple is located in front of Zimbo, as he leans forward, his center of mass will move forward, until it is no longer above his feet. At this point, a net torque will cause him to topple forward, no matter how strong his leg muscles are. It is possible that if the apple were placed directly at his feet, and Zimbo were sufficiently flexible, he could contort himself into an inverted U shape and pick up the apple without falling over. That would be worth paying to see.
