Chapter 18 - The Laws of Thermodynamics - Conceptual Questions - Page 643: 13

Answer

No

Work Step by Step

When we do work while putting things in order, we are giving off heat to the atmosphere. Thus, the entropy of the atmosphere is increased more than the entropy of the room is decreased, leading to a net increase in entropy of the universe. In other words, the entropy of one system may decrease, if the entropy of another system increases without violating the 2nd law of thermodynamics.
