Chapter 4 - Kinematics in Two Dimensions - Stop to Think 4.3 - Page 90: 1

Answer

d. 2 m.

Work Step by Step

The balls have the same initial velocity in the x direction and will maintain the same velocity throughout the fall. The balls will also accelerate downwards at the same rate. This acceleration is in the y direction and will not affect the balls' x velocities. This means they will spend the same time in the air. The distance in the x direction can be calculated as, \(d_x= v_x*t_x \) \(v_x\) and \(t_x\) are the same for both balls therefore \(d_x\) is the same for both. Therefore both balls will travel 2 m.
