Chapter 21 - Magnetic Forces and Magnetic Fields - Check Your Understanding - Page 588: 5

Answer

(d) Particle 1: positively charged, Particle 2: neutral, Particle 3: negatively charged

Work Step by Step

According to right hand rule, if the fingers point the direction of the magnetic field and the thumb points the velocity of the charge, then the palm of the hand indicates the direction of the magnetic force that acts on a positive charge. By applying the right hand rule for all the particles, we find: Particle 1 is positively charged, Particle 2 is neutral as its motion is unaffected even though the applied magnetic field is perpendicular to its motion. Particle 3 is negatively charged.
