Magnitude does not consider the sign on the number. Thus, if one vector is +5 in the x direction and one is -5 in the x-direction, their magnitudes will be equal, but they add to 0. However, if vectors have different magnitudes, they will never add to 0, for two numbers of different magnitude can never equal 0.
