The red petals reflect red light (which is why they appear red), but the green leaves absorb red light. When an object absorbs light, the light energy increases its temperature. White clothing worn in the desert reflects radiation of all visible colors, and therefore minimizes the absorption of the sun's radiant energy. (However, wearing loose-fitting dark robes is another way to combat the heat; convection currents flowing under the robes can have a significant cooling effect.)
