During an earthquake, the inertia (Chapter 2 concept) of the massive magnet tends to keep it at rest. However, the coils of wire move with the Earth, and so there is relative motion between the coils and the magnet. This induces a current within the conducting loops (a concept from this chapter), which depends on the amplitude of the ground shaking.
