a. Assume the Slinky is stretched horizontally in an east-west direction. To produce a transverse wave, shake the end in a north-south direction, perpendicular to the spring itself. You could also shake the end in an up-down fashion, again perpendicular to the spring itself.
b. To produce a longitudinal wave, shake the end east-west, in a direction parallel to its length. This creates a series of compressions and rarefactions.
