The ocean obviously consists of a large amount of water, which in turn corresponds to a large thermal mass. Changing the temperature of the water requires much more energy than changing the temperature over dry land, where the thermal mass is much lower. Through convection, the cooler oceans transfer energy to the surrounding air, leading to lower temperatures.
