Chapter 1 - Structure and Bonding - Exercises - Page 27f: 45

Answer

(a) See picture to find out the number of hydrogens per carbon atom for Tamiflu. Molecular formula: $C_{16}H_{28}N_{2}O_{4}$ (b) See picture to find out the number of hydrogens per carbon atom for Plavix. Molecular formula: $C_{16}H_{16}ClNO_{2}S$

Work Step by Step

- To find out the number of hydrogens bonded to a carbon atom, just count the lines that are connected to a specific carbon atom. To finally get the number of H-atoms apply the following formula: $4−lines=xH$ - the molecular formula contains the actual number of atoms in a molecule. - So, in order to get the molecular formula for a substance, you simply count the number of occurrences of each type of atom and write it as a subscript next to that atom. If an atom just appears once in this substance then you just mention this atom in the molecular formula, i.e. just note down the symbol of this atom.
