## Organic Chemistry 9th Edition

(a) Molecular formula of Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) - $C_{9}H_{8}O_{4}$ (b) Molecular Formula of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) - $C_{6}H_{8}O_{6}$ (c) Molecular Formula of Nicotine - $C_{10}H_{14}N_{2}$ (d) Molecular Formula of Glucose - $C_{6}H_{12}O_{6}$
1. Count the number of Carbon atoms in each structure and write the number of atoms as a subscript next to the symbol of the Carbon atom, i.e. C 2. Count the number of Hydrogen atoms in each structure and mention the same as a subscript next to the symbol of the the Hydrogen atom, i.e. H. 3. Count other atoms present in the structures and mention each of them as subscripts next to the symbols of the respective elements. (a) Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) Number of Carbon atoms = 9 Number of Hydrogen atoms = 8 Number of Oxygen atoms = 4 The formula becomes - $C_{9}H_{8}O_{4}$ (b) Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) Number of Carbon atoms = 6 Number of Hydrogen atoms = 8 Number of Oxygen atoms = 6 The formula becomes - $C_{6}H_{8}O_{6}$ (c) Nicotine Number of Carbon atoms = 10 Number of Hydrogen atoms = 14 Number of Nitrogen atoms = 2 The formula becomes - $C_{10}H_{14}N_{2}$ (d) Glucose Number of Carbon atoms = 6 Number of Hydrogen atoms = 8 Number of Oxygen atoms = 6 The formula becomes - $C_{6}H_{12}O_{6}$
