Chapter 11 - Reactions of Alcohols - Problems - Page 472: Problem 11-2 g

Answer

Ethanol reaction with PCC gives: Acetaldehyde Ethanol reaction with Chromic acid gives: Acetic acid after Acetaldhyde

Work Step by Step

The reaction of ethanol with PCC will lead only to acetaldehyde as the PCC is a better reagent for the limited oxidation of primary alcohols to aldehydes. while its reaction with chromic acid will proceed to give carboxylic acid (in this case Acetic acid) as after its reaction with chromic acid, one hydrogen atom will remain on the carbonyl carbon that can further react with chromic acid again giving carboxylic acid.
