Chapter 7 - Chemical Reactions - Exercises - Questions - Page 239: 10

Answer

When an ionic substance such as sodium chloride (table salt) is dissolved in the universal solvent (water), the ionic substance breaks apart or decomposed into its ions. This process is called disassociation. In the case of $NaCl$, the compound would split up into Na+ and Cl- which are the two ions. The positive ion is the cation, and the negative ion is called the anion.
