Chapter 5 - Molecules and Compounds - Exercises - Problems - Page 160: 72

Answer

a) Xenon Tetrafluroide b) Phosphorus Triiodide c) Sulfur Trioxide d) Silicon Tetrachloride e) Diiodine pentoxide

Work Step by Step

Since all of the compounds are contently bonded (i.e. covalent compounds), we must name them using the appropriate prefixes. The first element name stays exactly the same and before the second compound, the appropriate prefix is added and the suffix for these compounds is "ide". a) $XeF_{4}$. Since there are 4 fluorine, the prefix is tetra. b) $PI_{3}$ Since there are 3 iodine, the prefix is tri c) $SO_{3}$ Since there are 3 oxygen, the prefix is tri. d) $SiCl_{4}$ Since there are 4 chlorine, the prefix is tetra. e) $I_{2}O_{5}$ Since there are 5 oxygen, the prefix is pent.
