Chapter 5 - Nuclear Chemistry - 5.1 Natural Radioactivity - Questions and Problems - Page 155: 5.12

Answer

Match: a. penetrates farthest into skin and body tissues- 3. gamma radiation b. shielding protection includes lab coats and gloves- 1. alpha particle and 2. beta particle c. travels only a short distance in air- 1. alpha particle

Work Step by Step

gamma rays are capable of completely passing through body tissues and can be hazardous. Alpha particle don't travel fast and far because of it's heavy mass. So light clothing is enough to protect ourselves from it. lab coats and gloves are sufficient for people who handle it. Beta particles can burn the skin and penetrate a little into the body tissues. Hence lab coats and gloves are necessary for shielding and protection.
