Chapter 1 - Chemistry and Measurement - Questions and Problems - Page 37: 1.127

Answer

The liquid is chloroform.

Work Step by Step

1- Find the density of the liquid: d = $\frac{m}{V}$ d = $\frac{22.3g}{15.0 mL}$ d = 1.49 $\frac{g}{mL}$ = 1.49 $\frac{g}{cm^{3}}$ 2- Compare this density with the known densities of acetone, benzene, chloroform, and carbon tetra-chloride. The density 1.49 $\frac{g}{cm^{3}}$ is close to the density of chloroform 1.489 $\frac{g}{cm^{3}}$, so the liquid is chloroform.
