Chapter 22 - Problems - Page 1011: 22.27

Answer

The ability to oxidize easily

Work Step by Step

Iron and nickel are more easily oxidized than copper. Also, they are less likely to be reduced. They are converted into slag during roasting and are separated then from copper. In the electrorefining process, all three metals are in solution, but only Cu21 ions are reduced at the cathode to form Cu(s) because of the property mentioned above.
