Chapter 9 - Molecular Geometry and Bonding Theories - Exercises - Page 391: 9.42e

Answer

CH3Br is polar. Although this molecule has a tetrahedral shape, Br has a stronger electronegativity than H making it polar.

Work Step by Step

Draw CH3Br using a Lewis dot diagram. C will be the central atom and H3 and Br will surround it. Write the electronegativity of each atom on the diagram. H has an electronegativity of 2.1, C has an electronegativity of 2.5 and Br has an electronegativity of 2.8. Because Br has the highest electronegativity the molecule is polar.
