Chapter 9 - Molecular Geometry and Bonding Theories - Exercises - Page 388: 9.5e

Answer

The energy of the minimum of the function, given by the y-coordinate at that point, is a good way to estimate bond strength.

Work Step by Step

As the energy decreases, the bond becomes more stable and is harder to break. The minimum shows the length that the bond will be at naturally, so the lower the minimum, the greater the bond strength. For this reason, double and triple bonds, which are generally stronger than single bonds, usually have a lower minimum energy than single bonds.
