Planck's quantum hypothesis proposed that energy is quantized and can only exist in discrete units or "quanta." Einstein applied this idea to the photoelectric effect by suggesting that light energy is also quantized in particles called photons. These photons have energy proportional to their frequency, not intensity. This explained the observed phenomena in the photoelectric effect, supporting the emerging quantum theory.
