Chapter 14 - Acids and Bases - Conceptual Exercise 14.5 - Conjugate Acid-Base Strength - Page 613: a

Answer

The reverse reaction is favored for the equilibrium.

Work Step by Step

1. Identify the acids and bases: $Acids : CH_3COOH$ and $HS{O_4}^-$ $Bases: S{O_4}^{2-}$ and $CH_3COO^-$ 2. Using the Figure 14.2 (Page 612), determine which acid and which base is stronger: $Acid: HS{O_4}^-$ $Base: CH_3COO^-$ - Therefore, the strong electrolytes are on the right side of the reaction. And since the reaction favor going from the stronger side to the weaker, it will go from the right to the left, which is represented by "reverse" reaction.
