A limiting reactant is the reactant that limits the amount of product that can be produced from a chemical reaction. The reactant in excess is any reactant that occurs in a quantity greater than required to completely react with limiting reactant.

Theoretical yield is the greatest possible amount of product that can be made in a chemical reaction based on the amount of limiting reactant. Percent yield is the percentage of the theoretical yield of a chemical reaction that is actually produced. It is the ratio of actual yield to the theoretical yield multiplied by 100 to give a percentage.
