Answer
The Bayer process is a hydrometallurgical process used to separate Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ from other oxides. To do so, the Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ is subjected to a very specific process in which it is dissolved in hot, concentrated NaOH. Doing so allows the other oxides to be removed as solids, while the Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ precipitates out of the solution upon being neutralized.
