The reaction quotient is the equilibrium constant with the concentrations of reactants and products at any time. The concentrations don't have to be at equilibrium. Q can measure the progression of the reaction. If Q>Kc, then the equilibrium favors the reactants. If Q < Kc, then equilibrium favors the products. Of the Q = Kc, then the reaction is in equilibrium.
