Distillation is used to separate homogeneous mixtures by heating the mixture to boil off the more volatile (easily vaporizable) liquid and collecting it separately from the less volatile liquid(s) it leaves behind.

The liquid with the lowest boiling point can be made to vaporize out of the mixture if the components boiling points are sufficiently different from each other. The vapor can then be cooled in a condenser and collected again.
