Chapter 2 - Atoms, Molecules, and Ions - Questions - Page 74: 27

Answer

Moving down the group, the metallic character increases while moving from left to right in the period, the metallic character decreases.

Work Step by Step

It is one of the properties of metals to have free electrons. As we move down the group, the metallic character increases because the number of orbitals increases which consequently increases the distance between nucleus and outermost shell electrons. Due to this increased distance, the outermost shell electrons are loosely bound and can easily be removed. On the other hand while moving across a period, one may find that the metallic character decreases. This is due to the fact that the number of protons increases in a period moving from left to right which causes the increased attraction between nucleus and electrons and thus metallic character decreases.
