Chapter 2 - Questions and Problems - Page 79: 2.109

Answer

Magnesium oxide is MgO. Strontium oxide is SrO.

Work Step by Step

Calcium, magnesium, and strontium all belong to the alkaline earth metal family. They all readily become cations by giving up their two outer electrons to take on a +2 charge. On the other hand, oxygen readily becomes an anion, taking on two more electrons to gain a -2 charge. Calcium, magnesium, and strontium all combine with oxygen by giving up their two outer electrons to oxygen. The resulting compounds feature a one-to-one relationship between the alkaline earth metal and oxygen. Therefore, magnesium combines with oxygen to form magnesium oxide (MgO), and strontium combines with oxygen to form strontium oxide (SrO).
