Chapter 21 - Electrochemistry - 21.3 Electrolytic Cells - 21.3 Lesson Check - Page 751: 21

Answer

Some applications of electrolysis in the field of metallurgy are plating, purifying and refining of metals. Metal plating is used to cover one metal with another, often for protection from corrosion or for the sake of attractiveness (such as in medals). Electrowinning is a method in which molten salts or aqueous solutions are reduced at the cathode to produce very pure metal samples. In electrorefining, impure samples are made at the anode, oxidized ot the cation, and reduced to the pure metal at the cathode.
