Chapter 5 - Chemical Periodicity - Exercises - 203 - Page 203: 20

Answer

The first ionization energy and atomic radius are inversely related.

Work Step by Step

The first ionization energy and atomic radius are inversely related. As the atomic radius increases the effective nuclear charge towards valence shell electrons decreases and hence ionization energy decreases. Similarly, as the atomic radius decreases valence electrons are tightly held by the nucleus and it is difficult to remove the valence electron and hence ionization energy increases.
