The great deal of variation in some of the replicated DNA strands could be due to mutations in some of the components of the repair systems or a lack of proof reading by the DNA Polymerase. This kind of mutation generates hyper-mutability, while lower mutation rates are due to single mutations in what we consider singular genes or non-functional sequences of the DNA.
