Listeriosis: The causative agent, Listeria monocytogens, can be found in many types of food. When pregnant women are infected with Listeria monocytogens, the bacteria may cause fetal damage or death. Bacteriophages can be used to eliminate Listeria on contaminated food. Listeria L-forms lack cell walls and are able to persist inside of macrophages after phagocytosis.
