Work Step by Step

The genus Borrelia contains organisms that are responsible for relapsing fever. Due to the special characteristics of the Borrelia bacteria, the victim occasionally experiences periods of remission from fever followed by relapses. Borrelia bacteria can regularly alter the proteins on their outer surface, which gives them the ability to avoid the immune system and cause recurrent infections. The bacteria quickly switch to a different set of surface proteins as the body's immune system reacts to one set, which enables them to continue existing and reproducing.
