Work Step by Step

Interferon is a form of innate defense. Its synthesis and secretion is triggered by viral infection of the cell. It prevents further viral replication in surrounding cells by binding to their surfaces, triggering production of antiviral proteins that interfere with virus replication and can stimulate adaptive immune defenses. However, not all viruses are sensitive to the antimicrobial actions of interferons.
