Chapter 14 - Host-Microbe Relationships and Disease Processes - Explorations On The Web - Page 432: 2

Answer

The bacteria or normal flora on our skin, mouth and gastrointestinal tract influence overall condition of the body or host. The composition of the normal flora in the body is determined by nature of the local environment including pH, temperature, oxygen, water, and nutrient levels. The normal body flora dictates human anatomy, physiology, lifespan, and also cause of death of host. Some normal flora on skin inhibit growth of fungi and yeast on the skin but some may cause inflammation and acne. Some normal flora in mouth contribute to the nutrition of the host through synthesis of vitamins but some causes oral diseases including gingivitis and periodontal diseases. Some normal flora in gastrointestinal tract inhibit pathogens but some may produce diseases on its host.
