The systole is defined by the relaxation of the ventricles and the diastole is defined by the contraction of the ventricles. Each round of the cardiac cycle includes one systole and diastole as the ventricles of the heart relax and contract to create enough pressure to deliver blood through the valves that maintain directionality.
