Genes refer to a group of related genes across the animal kingdom that specify regions of the body plan of an embryo along the anterior-posterior axis of animals. The Hox genes closest at the 3′ end of each gene are expressed first in the anterior of the embryo and the Hox genes at the 5′ end of the gene are expressed afterwards and in the posterior region. Because of this, different portions of the embryo receive different combinations of Hox gene products, which in the developmental phase function as transcription factors.
