Chapter 9 - Section 9.2 - The Mouth, Pharynx, and Esophagus - Check Your Progress - Page 173: 1

Answer

The mouth is bound externally by the lips and cheeks. The roof is made up the anterior (front) hard palate and the posterior (rear) soft palate. The roof of the mouth separates the nasal cavities. Teeth have two main divisions; the crown (above the gum line), and the root (below the gum line). The crown is coated with a hard layer of calcium compounds called enamel. The inner portion of the tooth contains nerves and blood vessels. The pharynx is a hollow space at the back of the throat. It is connected to the mouth and nasal passage on one end, and to the esophagus and trachea on the other end. Food enters from the pharynx into the esophagus after swallowing. The esophagus is a muscular tube that moves food into the stomach.
