Chapter 8 - Section 8.2 - Infectious Diseases and Human Health - Check Your Progress - Page 163: 2

Answer

HIV replication process Begins when HIV encounters CD4 cell. 1. Binding of virus to molecules on CD4 cells surface 2. Fusion of HIV to the CD4 cell membrane that allows HIV to enter the CD4 cell; once HIV enters the CD4 cell, it releases HIV RNA and enzymes 3. Reverse transcriptase is released and used to convert its genetic material to HIV DNA; allows to enter the CD4 nucleus and combine with the cell DNA 4. HIV releases integrase and uses them to integrate the HIV DNA into the host cell DNA 5. The HIV then uses CD4 cells to create long chains of HIV proteins that are responsible for HIV replication 6. In assembly, new HIV RNA and proteins move to the surface of the CD4 cell and made up a noninfectious HIV 7. In budding, the noninfectious HIV detaches itself from the CD4 cell and releases protease that breaks up the long proteins creating infectious HIV.
