Chapter 4 - Review - Page 75: 7

Answer

a. locomotion or movement of the cell b. movement of debris around the cell

Work Step by Step

Cilia are short, hair-like structures found on the surface of mammalian cells. For locomotion, the cilia van move in order to propel the cell forward, like oars of a rowboat. For the movement of debris, the cilia makes similar sweeping motions while the cell itself is fixed in place - this can be seen in the human respiratory track, where cilia push aside mucus and dust to keep it clear for air to flow through.
