Since carbon dioxide can diffuse freely across membranes (see earlier in the chapter), and its production inside the cell creates a concentration gradient tending to drive it out of the cell. Carbon dioxide will simply diffuse out of the cell if allowed to do so, removing this respiratory waste product.
