Chapter 29 - 29.1 - Concept Check - Page 618: 4

Answer

Land plants are monophyletic since the group includes all of the descendants and only the descendants of the first plant colonizer of land. This is also true for the vascular plants and seed plants. The nonvascular plants and seedless vascular plants are paraphyletic since they exclude some descendants of their common ancestor (vascular plants and seed plants, respectively).

Work Step by Step

To get this question, review the definitions of monophyletic and paraphyletic in Ch. 26. Then review p. 616-617 on grades and clades as well as for information on each of the groups listed in the question.
