Chapter 20 - 20.3 - Concept Check - Page 427: 3

Answer

Individual carrot cells and fully differentiated muscle cells are both adult cells which have differentiated, but plant cells are generally much more able to regenerate an entire plant or other specific cell types than animal cells are able to do. Continued differentiation is much more difficult to halt in the muscle cell due to its expression of the myoD gene.

Work Step by Step

Review Concept 20.3 and pay special attention to the difference between animal and plant cells in their capacity to produce various types of cells when removed from the site in their organism where they have matured.
