In biological magnification, organisms higher on the food chain accumulate greater amounts of a pollutant than organisms lower on a food chain. For example, in the 1960s, the ospreys living in a marsh ecosystem had levels of an insecticide called DDT that were more than 270,000 greater than the amount of DDT in the water of that marsh ecosystem. These ospreys fed on the fish living in the water of that particular ecosystem.
