Chapter 48 - Self-Quiz - Page 883: 10

Answer

d. prevent ozone destruction

Work Step by Step

CFCs, or chlorofluorocarbons, were determined to be the culprits that depleted the ozone layer. The ozone layer protects the earth from the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation from the sun. The chlorine atom from a chlorofluorocarbon combines with ozone, thus splitting the ozone molecule into oxygen molecules. This destroys the ozone molecule. Oxygen molecules do not protect the earth from ultraviolet radiation.
