Malaria is a disease caused by a parasite carried by mosquitoes. The sickle cell gene is a defective gene that causes red blood cells to have a sickle shape instead of the normal disc shape; however, a formidable percentage of the inhabitants of Africa still carry this gene because individuals that have the heterozygous form are rather resistant to malaria.
