With Clones A and D, one could construct the map. It would be possible as well, though not as elegant in terms of the number of clones used, to build the map using Clones A, B, and D.

Basically, to build the map, it is necessary to have some overlap between successive clones (see Fig. 18.3 panel 3). The two options listed in the answer provide this without having to use all four clones shown in panel 2.
