The cell would die if these two items were impermeable. There are many essential items that cells need such as water, sugars, and ions to complete cellular processes such as respiration and photosynthesis. Without respiration the cell would have no ATP and without photosynthesis the plant cell would have no food source.

Cells have evolved to live within a particular environment. They survive only because the nutrients available to them in their environment allow them to survive. Without the ability to take in those nutrients the cell would die.
