As with most traits, this adaptation would be detrimental to some organisms but is advantageous to others. In organisms where we see with three chambered hearts, such as frogs, this particular circulatory model's efficiency is an advantageous adaptation. For example, animals with this type of heart have an ability to shut off blood flow to the lungs when underwater.
