Chapter 22 - 22.1 - Concept Check - Page 469: 2

Answer

Cuvier's ideas could be tested in part: the idea that extinctions are followed by immigration of organisms from outside that area. However, there is not enough time to completely test his ideas about occasional catastrophes and immigration, as opposed to evolution. Lamarck's idea about the inheritance of acquired characters could be tested and shown to be false. Thus, both are scientific hypotheses.

Work Step by Step

To test an hypothesis, you have to be able to be able to create conditions in which variations on it are run and compared to a control/baseline. Use your imagination to apply this to each of the ideas discussed in the question. Fig. 22.4 should help suggest a test for Lamarck's idea: you could use bonsai trees to see if their progeny also grew as bonsais (they don't).
